Uncle Fee is an original Sound System owner circa 1968 – 1980.
He still ‘play’s out’ occasionally and has appeared on the odd BBC local radio show (he’s done two in the last year). Also he used to have his own short lived show on BBC Radio Ipswich spinning reggae with his mates from the sound system.

Barrington Levy - Teach The Youth

Been listening to an excellent cd, of Barrington Levy - Teach the Youth (1980 – ‘85 at Joe Gibbs), which has been out a couple of months now.
Don’t think I need to say much about this just that it is full of great tunes. Some feature period deejays Lui Lepkie, Ranking Trevor, Kojak & Liza. There are also 4 dub versions at the end performed by Rocky Gibbs & the Professionals, with it all being immaculately produced by the late Joe Gibbs.
Best tracks IMO are:
“Mine Yuh Mouth / Late Night Movie”, which makes nice use of the Bobby Babylon riddim.
The lazy paced “Do Good” and the steady skank of “Good Loving”.

All in all if you’ve never heard any Barrington before it’s a great place to start and if you know and are a fan of the man it’s a great way to collect the complete Joe Gibbs recordings with some 12" versions that have unavailable for around 25 years..... 8-)

Track List

01- Wife and Sweetheart-Dem A Friend Ft Lui Lepke
02- Mine Yuh Mouth-Late Night Movie Ft. Lui Lepke
03- Quick Divorce-Mek You Lie Ft. Lui Lepke
04- My Woman-Ten Thousand Woman Ft. Kojak and Liza
05- Do Good (Extended)
06- Teach the Youth
07- Good Loving
08- Give You Everything
09- Family Affair
10- Mouth Talk
11- Gwan and Lef_Me
12- Cast Eye Boy

"Feelin' Pressure"

Here is a review of an LP by ...
Pressure - Love And Affection
from top Swiss reggae whizz and Springline cohort Fyah Youth....

One of the most promising talents of modern reggae, the Virgin Island's own, Pressure has released the album "Love And Affection" produced by Donavon "Vendetta" Bennett. The album turns out to be fantastic and is on a very high level quality wise!Pressure's style reminds one of sizzla, especially when he sings high notes, but he has developed his own style and his unique voice is a real attention catcher. The album starts with the great opener "Bless The Children" that introduces Pressure as a both conscious and uplifting lyricist. The production is very smooth, typically Don Corleon, and Pressure gives his best on each riddim. The album's highlights are "Ghetto Life" (a harsh reality song that shows us Pressures ruffer notes), "Love And Affection" the wonderful title track, "Be Free", "So Appealing" on the Love Potion riddim, "Show Love" and the fantastic "Why" that comes with a smooth hip hop touch. My absolute favourite album right now!

Mossburg Music

Arriving through the post at the Sprinline office the other day was this from http://mossburgmusic.com/. I have to admit this is a new label to me and hails from the States, but some of the artist names are familiar and the ‘read ups’ for some of their releases do sound intriguing to say the least. No tasters or samples I’m afraid, but here is what they had to say...
-
The Stingers ATX - 'This Time Around' MB-2015
The latest offering from the ever-evolving reggae/ska ensemble from Austin, TX. This soulful record features the band’s usual sweet harmonies and sophisticated song writing, with a newer and somewhat deeper groove. Produced by Victor Rice, this album embraces the group’s ska roots while showcasing a more mature sound. The CD, released in April 2008, will be followed by a vinyl selection. ‘This Time Around' is also available as a digital download in both MP3 and full AIFF formats.
-
Hi Fi Killers - 'Turf War Dub' MB-2012
The first Mossburg release for 2008 came from the Hi Fi Killers. This group initially found success in the late 1990s with releases on Loosegrove Records. After the collapse of that label, the Hi Fi Killers returned to the studio and recorded this collection of amazing dub selections. The group signed with Mossburg Music in late2007. Heavy rhythms and tasteful, yet aggressive dub make this record and the Hi Fi Killers a perfect fit with the Mossburg
-
Contra Coup - 'On Time' MB-2010
This debut album, from the Austin, TX, band Contra Coup, offers up16 hard-hitting, reggae tracks produced by legend Clinton Fearon, including four dub versions by Victor Rice. The heavy rhythms and sweet harmonies, coupled with great song writing and Fearon’s skilful production, makes this a terrific record for the casual reggae fan as well as the dedicated connoisseur.
-
Contra Coup - 'Contra Coup Meets Victor Rice’ 12” MB-2011
The vinyl accompaniment to On Time' includes four tracks from the record, along with the four matching dub versions by Victor Rice on the opposite side all on Mossburg’s signature lush red vinyl.
-
Dub Fanatic - 'Terrible Riddims' MB-2013
DUB FANATIC is one of many pseudonyms for producer and musician Johnny Horn. This full-length, dub album contains some of his finest work. Pounding bass and drums, clever bubbling guitar, and masterful keyboard arrangements in the classic style make this one of the finest new dub records out there. With guest appearances by Lynval Golding (formerly of The Specials) and other great musicians, Horn has created a memorable dub experience.
-
Notables - 'Godfather Ska' 7” MB-2001
Rugged ska, with a Sixties sound that's the Notables. This Northwest band first hit the scene with the 1993 Mossburg Music release of 'Godfather Ska.' This ska version of the classic song found its way to DJs around the world. But the plates were destroyedduring the fourth pressing and the master tapes were lost. Then, during the move of Mossburg Music headquarters to Nevada, the mastertapes were found, giving the world a second chance at this gem. With its original red vinyl and silver label, this reissue of Mossburg Music’s debut release looks and sounds just as good as the 1993 version.

They are also happy to announce the addition of Charlie’s Records releases to the digital download section of their shop and go on to say.....

"Charlie’s Records consistently produces great reggae and dub, with only the heaviest of grooves. Their catalogue includes the one and only McPullish, the up and coming Judge, as well as tracks with Luciano, Chezidek, Fantan Mojah and more. The latest release, Back to Mount Zion' is hot offthe press and already doing very well worldwide"

Linton Kwesi Johnson ~ Dread Beat An’ Blood

As a kind of finish to the LKJ spotlight airing over on SJR here is a review I did earlier in the year on the Springline forum

Dread Beat An ' Blood was one of the first Reggae albums I brought back in about 1983 (Album originally released in 1978), and is still most probably the most powerful album in my collection for its political content and dark sound, and surprisingly or more so sadly it is still quite relevant today. The lyrics are drawn from a book of poems by LKJ about the trials and tribulations of British West Indians that was published in 1975 by Bogle-L'Ouverture.
Don’t however let the idea of an album of poems put you off. All of these poems are recited over heavy, heavy dub-reggae riddims, usually written in collaboration with renowned British reggae producer/artist Dennis Bovell. The majority of these songs are driven by throbbing bass lines, drum and percussion interspersed with minimal or short bursts of piano & keyboard quite often with heavy echo, which just enhances its dark and menacing sound.
LKJ takes the lead and sings / recites his poems over all of the songs except one: “Song Of Blood”, which features Vivian Weathers on vocals, his voice a Horace Andy style falsetto, (it is a shame that this is the only tune I have of his), sounds like a cry of pain and anguish for the need to fight, and that blood might / will be spilled for the cause, over the bass heavy driven tune.
“Five Nights of Bleeding” recounts tales of trouble between fellow West Indian gangs, and also the British police's over zealous use S.U.S laws and violence against the West Indian population in London and indeed throughout the country at that time. It is also a kind of rallying call to unite and fight together against oppression and the common enemy. “It Dread Inna Inglan” (my favourite) is just a great tune calling to ‘Free George Lindo’ a black man fitted up by the police for theft and burglary in Bradford, while the close of the album, “All Wi Doin Is Defendin”is another rallying call, and a kind of prophecy to the Brixton, Toxteth and Bristol riots to come in 1981. “Man Free” is the only real, (for want of a better word), ‘celebratory’ song and it describes the legal fight for and eventual freedom of Darcus Howe from Pentonville prison. This is sung / recited over a dark and brooding drum, percussion and bass rhythm. Darcus was the editor of the magazine Race Today, whom had first published LKJ’s poems back in 1974. He had been imprisoned for three months for assaulting a police officer.
This album must surely go down in the chronicles of time as being one the most explicit depictions of government supported racism and police brutality in 1970’s England, and for some does not make easy listening with its almost apocalyptic feel from the view of a person who was witness and subject to it.
I reckon this album should appear in the top 10 albums of all time, but unfortunately most probably never will due to its strong political content. Still in my humble opinion this is a true masterpiece and the opening line says it all....
