ROY SHIRLEY 1944 - 2008, A few words from us.

Roy Shirley began singing, like many talented singers, by singing in the local Church choir with his mother while just a boy. As He grew up he went on to further develop his musical talent by learning the guitar and progressed with the help of Jimmy Cliff, and band leaders Byron Lee, Sonny Bradshaw and Drum Bago, in the early sixties. As Roy grew with confidence his stage show began to evolve into frenetic energy filled performances and, his contact with the audience and his ability to move, rouse, and satisfy the crowd made him more and more popular. Not only where his shows wild with deep emotions, he would cry with either sorrow or laughter during them, but he was also making a name for his colourful outfits as well.
He is credited as being the man who brought about the one drop beat in Jamaica which then led into the Rock Steady beat, from which came the rolling sounds of Reggae, Lovers Rock and Ragamuffin. His biggest hit was in 1965 "Hold Them" which was produced by Joe Gibbs and was an international best seller. Although maybe not always a major player he has continued working throughout the years and was even the first vocalist with whom King Tubby recorded, when he released "Stepping Razor" in 1973.
His love for music has not just been restricted to the stage but he has also put in effort with the community at large, through his generous works, as founder of the British Universal Talent Development Association. Here he strongly believed in trying to help, support, develop and establish new young talented artists worldwide. Giving them a strong and supportive foundation, publishing their works and guiding their career development which allowed him to provide them with golden opportunities.
He has also tough been busy in the studio which saw him recently release three volumes of work in differing styles. 'Nice Up the City', 'The Music Nice' and 'Love is Forever' were / are released on the internet.
The music and lyrics in 'Nice Up he City' reflect the mood for enjoyment and entertainment and Roy delivers these, with his typical unique style of strong original vocal that is backed by some of London's most promising musicians.
'The Music Nice' is based around the idea that music creates love and unity in the community and above all respect. This he expresses with his thoughts on attitudes which have been lost in today's rushed and thoughtless society. 'Love is Forever' is a CD of exactly what you'd expect, ballads of soul filled, love songs, which create an atmosphere of romantic, faithful loving.
Roy who unfortunately passed last week said that
"I hope my music will bring great joy to the people: those who heed its uplifting message will surely feel it does. Singers and producers will hopefully gain the inspiration to create peaceful, loving lyrics again, to keep the people happy and the community together in one love, one heart and one destiny".

This motivation behind all of his works, just confirms why Roy Shirley was also known as the High Priest.

ROY SHIRLEY 1944 - 2008

It is with great regret that Springline reports the passing of Roy Shirley, the ‘High Priest Of Reggae’.

Born Ainsworth Roy Rushton Shirley in 1944, he made his recording debut in the mid-sixties, cutting ‘Shirley’ for Leslie Kong, before teaming up first with Errol Dunkley and later, Ken Boothe, the latter also joining him in the Leaders, a vocal quartet that also featured Joe White and Chuck Josephs. Early the following year, Shirley founded the Uniques along with Slim Smith and Franklyn White, but the trio proved short-lived and after recording material with Prince Buster and Karl ‘J.J.’ Johnson, the group disbanded.Following the break up of the Uniques, Shirley attended one-off sessions for Blondel Calnek and WIRL Records before cutting what was to be his first major hit, ‘Hold Them’ (aka ‘Feel Good’) for Joe Gibbs. Over the next five years, he recorded for an array of producers as well as founding his own Public Records imprint and was rarely out of the Jamaican charts, his spectacular run of hits only brought to an end by his relocation to Britain around 1973. During this period he had also established a reputation as a stage performer without equal in Jamaica, his live shows becoming celebrated events on the island. Soon after his move to London, Roy opened a record shop in Dalston and over the years that followed remained active musically, recording new material and founding the British Universal Talent Development Association to help develop new young talent worldwide.Truly unique, Roy was not only one of one of the true greats of Jamaican music’s first golden age, but also a gentleman in every sense of the word and he will be sadly missed by all those who knew him, either personally or through his music.

Pama International - Love Filled Dub Band

Pama International’s first album, released on their own Rockers Revolt label, Love Filled Dub Band finds a band who are starting to find their stride, and gives you exactly what it says on the tin. A musical mix of “Soul-fuelled, dub-induced Roots, Rockers & Reggae.”, and lyrically the 'one love' ideal as the album deals with the multitude of troubles in the world today. From environmental global disasters and war to violence on the streets and the wasteful consumerism that plagues the society that we live in today. Don't however let this put you off as the tunes are not all doom and gloom, but try to raise the spirits and the tunes still have a party vibe.
The album starts with the funky, soul fuelled reggae of, “Wherever You Lead” and is followed by new single “Highrise” with it's slowed down Cherry Oh Baby riddim and features guest vocalist Michie One (one half of the London Reggae duo, Louchie Lou & Michie One). In fact the whole LP features guest appearances throughout some of the more notable being Rico Rodriguez, Sir Horace Panter (Bass), Paul Heskett (Sax) who once appeared with 2 Tone one song (hit might be pushing it) wonders the Swinging Cats, and on all tracks is Lynval Golding. Who also wrote and supplies the vocals for “Wonder Wonder”. There are also a couple of dub versions of some tunes nicely scattered across the album rather than following straight on in the shape of “Orgon will Follow” (Wherever You Lead) and, “Lovely Dub” (Lovely Wife). The whole things finishes rather surprisingly with the Northern Soul inspired “Be My Guest (a taste of things to come, maybe?).
This album is a fine start on the new label from Sean Flowerdew and Finny the two constants in Pama (they have been together since the late 80s when they were with ska band The Loafers) and I hope a sign of great things to come.

Here to accompany the interview is a short biography on the man and how he started.

Scientist (Overton Brown) began his career building sound system audio amplifiers in the late 70's, until one day, whilst repairing a television for a friend who had worked for King Tubby's, he needed a transformer and King Tubby's was the only place to find those particular types of transformers. Overton was excited and considered himself very lucky to have the opportunity to meet this brilliant man. After that, it became a regular place him to buy special made power and output transformers for the amplifiers that he was building. King Tubby became impressed with the electronic skills and abilities of the young engineer that he offered him a job working at the studio in around 1978. He so impressed the producer with his work that he soon became his protege and with this he quickly began to make a reputation for himself with his innovative, wild mixes.
In 1980, Greensleeves released the productions of top Jamaican producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes, who was finding success with new and uprising singer Barrington Levy. Lawes was using King Tubby's studio for his voicing and final mix-downs and offered Greensleeves a couple of dub albums mixed by Tubby's exciting young engineer. The Scientist, VS Prince Jammy (1980), was released here and consisted mostly of dub mixes of Barrington tracks. This album was presented as The "Big Showdown" between the two dubmasters. Greensleeves followed this album with another proclaiming The Scientist to be the Heavyweight Dub Champion. The Scientist soon became Jamaica's top recording engineer with an almost overwhelming flow of albums released & mixed by The Scientist from various sources throughout the early 80's. Greensleeves, in particular issued album after album most of which featured great cartoon sleeves.

Reggae For The People Tour - London ULU July 4th 2008

Went to ULU in London to catch the.....

"Reggae For The People Tour"

and all I can say is....WOW! what a night.

The Pietasters got everything off and running in fine order, and 'Maggie Mae' and a cover of The Business' 'Drinking & Driving' really got the place rocking.
The Slackers were next and this was the first time I'd caught them live. My mate who went with me has caught them a couple of times and kept raving about them, and everything he said was spot on. If you have never seen them live make sure you do!!
Pama where a class act as you'd expect, with Lynval Golding stealing the show. The encore of 'Message To You' with obligatory stage invasion finished things off nicely.
After the gig as everyone was leaving Mungo's (Who had been DJing between each set) started playing some rub-a-dub / dancehall sounds and had some fella toasting over the top, didn't catch who he was but top sounds.
So my recommendation to you all is next time any of these boys are in your area get along and you'll be guaranteed a skankin' great night out.

The Pietasters first break came early for D.C’s ska darlings in
1997, when Rancid’s Tim Armstrong signed them to Hellcat/Epitaph where they recorded two albums with producer Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion)
The genre-defining Willis (SPIN Magazine called it; an equal opportunity dancehall crasher; part 60s keg rock, part 2 Tone and part Motown.
Awesome Mix Tape #6 (CMJ noted it for; lacing a Stax shout-out feel with Caribbean rhythms. The soul- charged Turbo was released in 2002 by Fueled Ramen.
The Pietasters shared bills with NOFX and Less Than Jake on the epic Warped Tours, and followed with a stateside run with Joe Strummer. 3 years later, they worked as James Brown’s back-up band for one surreal and historic evening.

The Slackers - Self Medication

The Slackers are another band that are still going strong after the third wave ska revival of the early 1990s and have maintained a steady procession of releases in their 18 odd years; I make this their 11th studio album.
Self Medication is predominately on the rocksteady, early reggae sounding tip, with a dash of good ol’ ska thrown in. The LP kicks off nicely with the up-tempo 'Everyday Is Sunday', a happy go lucky kinda song about the joys of unemployment and finding things to do to fill the time. The pick of this fine bunch for me though are the pulsing ‘Don’t You Want a Man’, ‘Leave Me, a nice ska tune with a Latin feel, and the skanking superb ‘Eviction’. There are however a couple of tracks that go away from the reggae feel completely in the shape of the good Beatles sounding ballad 'Stars' and the quirky (and weakest track I feel) Elvis parody 'Don't Have To'.
All in all this is great album with plenty to keep you listening and wanting more.

The Pietasters - All Day

Well I have to admit I'm not all that familiar with The Pietasters back catalogue and have seen it said that this LP is all the poorer for not having some of the edgy, Punk sound of old. This means though that I have the pleasure of reviewing this from a completely impartial view of not comparing it with their earlier work, and I have to say I think this LP sounds great. I have to admit though All Day sounds as if it was recorded in someone’s front room, but this only adds to its charm as it is the perfect LP for house parties, with Stephen Jackson's raw, soul vocal, Jorge Pezzimenti’s bass and the fine brass section helping to make some of the catchiest dancing tunes around. The LP has touch of everything, from the full on Motown influenced opening track "Change My Ways", Rocksteady skank of "Late Night Call", 60's garage band sound of "So Long" and badass Funk on bonus track "All Day (part 2)", which I'm sure is a forgotten track from James Brown's Jungle Groove LP. So you get all this along with a large slice of ska and even a couple of dub reggae tracks. Hell they even have a Jazzy interlude in the middle in the shape of "Anj Gil", so you can grab a beer and raid the fridge before getting back on the dance floor for the full on soul stomp of "Fozzy"(I'm sure I saw Wilson Picket and Otis Redding bob their heads to that one!) . All in all a fine LP, which never gets dull with its constant shift in pace and style.

Musician Producer and Dubplate Engineer Yabass is this months

artist showcase special at Springline. Whilst re mixing tunes for

this coming Saturday night's special for Showcase fm 'Yaba' took

time out for a quick interview via telephone from his studio in the UK..

Ed: Although your production sound is very distinct in it's own right your approach to recording and engineering has been likened to that '78-'80 Black Ark sound, who are your main influences and why?

Ya: "Well my main influence surprisingly is not Lee Perry although I like and admire Perry's productions I get more from listening to King Tubby's I think Tubby was more serious about his work where as Perry for me can be a little 'hit or miss' but when Perry does hit it's a Knockout punch! It's a great honour when people tell me I've locked into the Perry's

transmission's in my works"

Ed: Do you ever play live with a band?

Ya: "Yes,twice this year in Spain with The Manor thanks to Don Fe (Reggae Producer in Spain) and we hope to be up and running appearance wise later in the year..There's also talk of some live dubbing by Don Fe and myself ,we see bout that."

Ed: Are you a multi Instrumentalist?

Ya: "I play Drums ,Bass ,Guitar and Piano ,well you see it's because I get bored playing just one instrument so I move onto the next!"

Ed: Any musical collaborations ongoing?

Ya: "Well I've found my musical brother in The Manor so any collabs will more than likely be with him. Ed: You're part of the Mighty Jah Observer Sound System ,Tell us about that..

Ya: "I got involved with Spiderman (main Operator of Observer) about three years ago ,I rejigged his website for him renaming it Dreadsite! Observer has been around for over 30 years now and play Nottinghill Carnival every year.They are an Original Valve operated first generation roots and culture foundation sound" http://www.myspace.com/jahobserver

Ed: You easily have an albums worth of material available as downloads on Reggae Dubwise are there any plans for a Yabass CD album release?

Ya: "You know ,all the dub albums from time that I've listened to have maybe one or two killa tracks then the rest is filled out with sub standard material my aim was always to get a great sounding album and put it out on limited edition vinyl ,for me the magic went when CDs came onto the scene but yeah, that's still my aim ,one killa LP on vinyl.I probably still hav'nt recorded those songs for the album yet ,the tunes you hear now from me are warm ups..

Ed: What piece of studio fx could you simply Not be without?

Ya: "Gotta be the reverb ,it can cover a multitude of mistakes"

Ed: Recently SpringlineJamaica launched a new internet radio station called Showcase fm to air music works from the unsigned and uprising star.What are your thoughts on this..

Ya: "Well I've been waiting an awful long time for Springline ,I know there was other stations but the feel and vibe you guys give off is something you can almost touch you know ,real people playing real people's music"

Ed: The final word.....

Ya: "I just want to keep on pushing the vibe forward ,Dub music popped it's head up overground a few years back in the Seventies and then it went back underground ,maybe people wern't ready for it then? Only those of us that were tuned into the frequences those great artist's were transmitting got the message. Dub still hasn't had it's day in the sunshine but with people like Springline and Reggae Dubwise we see where it takes us"

Part of the Reggae arena for over thirty years and now

in his Fiftieth year himself the musical works of Yabass

are a true delight ,taking the listener back to those

overground dub times whilst always pushing the sonic

boundary of recording to the edge and ever forward.

His idea's and recordings come a plenty ,his collaborations

with fellow artist's combine to create a dub style within a

dub style ,it's a recognisable style from time but yet unique

in it's mighty vibe today.

well you'll hear Yabass playing the Melodica on the recording from Chalk farm studios

Yaba also played Piano on a handful of tunes with the Skin Flesh & Bones band.
